Day 8 - Wednesday, February 14, 2007

Problem Solution Outline

I. Intro

A. “There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story.” Linda Hogan
B. Global Warming – the planet is warming up
C. Winters are becoming warmer, glaciers are thinning, ocean temps rising
D. People – burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests
E. Global Warming is a problem in today’s world. If nothing is done, the situation will get worse and it could ruin our planet for good.

II. Body

A. Evidence:
a. Overall trend in the world is that winters are becoming warmer. Greenland’s massive ice sheet is shrinking. Glaciers in Antarctica are thinning. Ice the size of small states is breaking away from the Arctic and Antarctica. Average temps in Antarctica have risen 0.2 degrees Celsius in the last 150 years. There is hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica.
B. Evidence
a. Ocean temperatures are rising which is causing 50% more tropical storms than in 1970. This is also causing the oceans to expand and the sea level to rise. The sea level has risen 6-8 inches in the last 100 years.
C. Contributing Factors
a. People are omitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and other natural gases. The amount of greenhouse gases are causing the earth to stay heated and melting massive ice caps which in turn, raises ocean levels. Land Fills are also adding to greenhouse gases by producing methane.
D. Contributing Factors
a. Deforestation is also causing global warming because cutting down trees keeps more carbon dioxide in the air. Increased agriculture is also a contributing factor because it is one of the leading producers of greenhouse gas emissions.

III. Conclusion

A. Global Warming is a problem that is occurring around us everyday. The average temperature of the earth is rising, along with ocean temps, and the sea level. People are to blame for this. We are releasing too many greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels. We are destroying our earth, our only home, by cutting down forests.
B. There is a solution to this problem though. And something must be done before it is too late and human kind ends up dead. First, people at home need to heat and cool their homes smartly. People at home also need to reduce, reuse, and recycle. People in businesses need to improve energy efficiency by buying renewable energy. All people, to help save our planet, should use public transportation as much as possible, keep your car tuned, save electricity, and plant trees. It is not to late to start cleaning up our planet now, but if we wait long enough, it could be.

Day 5 - Friday, February 9, 2007

Role: Moderate

The problem in today's world is that the climate is changing very rapidly. The climate is warming up. This is a process known as Global Warming.
There is much evidence to support the fact that Global Warming is occuring. The overall trend in the world is that winters are becoming warmer. There is also the evidence that Greenland's massive ice sheet is shrinking and that the glaciers in Antarctica are thinning. Ocean temperatures are also rising. This is causing 50 percent more tropical storms than in 1970. Also the rise in ocean temps are causing the oceans to expand and sea level to rise. The last piece of evidence that shows that Global Warming is in fact occuring is that there is a hole in out planets ozone layer over Antarctica.
Global Warming is caused by people. People are omitting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. People are also causing Global Warming by cutting down forests. The other factor that causes Global Warming is carbon dioxide inside out atmosphere.
People have caused Global Warming but we are also able to help fix. There are many solutions to stop it. First, people at home need to heat and cool smartly. People at home also need to reduce, reuse, and recylce. In businesses people need to improve energy efficiency and buy renewable energy. All people, to help save our planet should also use public transportation as much as possible, save electricity, and plant trees.

Day 3 - Wedesday, Feburary 7th, 2007

State The Problem:
Too many kids are showing up to classes tardy.

Give Evidence:
Mr. Hatten has a long list of people with 3 tardies up on the white board. Other teachers also have similar lists. Also, I see students come to class late in my other classes.

Examine Contributing Factors:
The hallways are always way to crowded. Also, the bathrooms are usually busy and maybe a student needed to use the restroom very bad. Teachers might also hold students after class to talk to them and not write them a pass. Jammed lockers are another contributing factor.

Propose A Solution:
Extend passing time to 8 minutes like it was last year. Or have harsher punishments for 4 tardies so students are tardy less.

Day 1 - Monday, Feburary 5th, 2007

A friend is having trouble keeping up with the class. You suspect that bad study habits may be causing her grades to drop.

The first thing I would do would be to talk to my friend and see if their was a reason she was having trouble keeping up with the class. Maybe something is wrong at home that she needs someone to talk to about. If nothing was wrong then I would ask if I could help her. I would teach her the things that she doesn't understand and review everything. I would also help her change her study habits by showing her how I study to get a good grade in the class. If her grade didn't improve by me helping her, I would suggest that she talk to the teacher and stay after school one day to get help.

That is what I would do if one of my friends was having trouble in a class.
